Event Handler lets you run scripts in response to events in the VyOS system logs, providing automated reactions to system events.

## Overview

Event Handler provides:
- Real-time monitoring of journald logs
- Execution of custom scripts when patterns match
- Passing environment variables to scripts
- Filtering by syslog identifiers
- Automated responses to system events

Event Handler works with journald (the systemd journal) and supports regular expressions for matching events.

## Basic Configuration

### Minimal Setup

A minimal Event Handler configuration:

Where:
- `<event-name>` - the name of the event handler
- `<regex>` - the regular expression to match against logs
- `/config/scripts/handler.sh` - path to the executable script

## Event Handler Configuration

### Creating an Event Handler

Create a new event handler:

set service event-handler event MY_EVENT
```

### Defining a Pattern

The regular expression to match against logs (a required parameter):

```
set service event-handler event MY_EVENT filter pattern 'interface eth0.*up'
```

**Important**: The regular expression must match the entire message string, not just a part of it.

Pattern examples:

# Match for an interface
set service event-handler event LINK_DOWN filter pattern '.*link is no longer valid.*'

# Match for OSPF
set service event-handler event OSPF_CHANGE filter pattern '.*OSPF.*neighbor.*changed.*'

# Match for BGP

### Specifying the Script

The path to the executable script:

**Important**: The script must be executable:

The script can be written in any language:
- Shell (bash, sh)
- Python
- Perl
- Ruby

### Filtering by Syslog Identifier

Restrict matching to a specific syslog identifier:

Examples of syslog identifiers:
- `kernel` - kernel events
- `systemd` - systemd events
- `sshd` - SSH events
- `vyos-configd` - VyOS configuration events

Pass environment variables to the script (the recommended method):

### Script Arguments

Pass arguments to the script (a legacy method, not recommended):

**Recommendation**: Use environment variables instead of arguments.

### The Script Does Not Run

### The Pattern Does Not Trigger

### The Script Runs but Does Not Work
